Stuart was born in Wanganui and after travelling in Asia and Europe in the '70's, settled in the Wairarapa. His interest in Ceramics was inspired and encouraged by the late James Greig who also lived in the Wairarapa.
Following redundancy in 1988 when the Waingawa Freezing Works closed in Masterton, Stuart decided to turn his hobby of making pottery into his occupation. This eventually developed into teaching and he tutored at evening classes for many years, as well as making pots at home.

He was also a tutor at the King Street Art Works in Masterton where people with mental health issues were encouraged to explore their creativity. During this period, Stuart participated in exhibitions in Masterton , Wellington and Auckland.
In 2003, following an overnight stay in Coromandel Town ,Stuart and Catherine moved here. Inspired by the beautiful surroundings in which he lives, Stuart now pots full-time.

He has had Exhibitions in Hamilton, Auckland and Coromandel and participated in The Great Coromandel Arts Tour since its inception.
Stuart's studio is now open to the public.
